SBEM Compliance Part L

SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model) is the method of calculating a building’s energy and carbon performance for all commercial or industrial scale buildings in accordance with Part L of the UK Building Regulations. All new build structures and some extensions require SBEM calculations to be undertaken, which should be submitted as part of your Building Control Application, and form the basis for the generation of your EPC.

Part L Building Regulations were most recently updated on the 15th June 2022, with this update requiring new buildings to have their emissions of Carbon Dioxide reduced by around 27% over what was acceptable under the previous version. This leads not only to improved levels of fabric insulation being required, but changes to how buildings are heated, with the reduction in the carbon factor for electricity leading to a heat pump solution over traditional gas-fired boilers. The use of renewable energy technologies such as solar hot water systems and PV remain important routes to hit compliance, particularly since the notional building (which is the basis for the target compliance figure) now includes an amount of PV based on the building’s footprint.

ERS is experienced in SBEM calculations and delivering the ‘pass’ rating required for compliance with building regulations and exceeding this where required by planning policy. Using approved software we create a digital twin of your building, and are therefore able to advise on the impacts of variations in the design to lead to a cost effective solution for compliance.
