Energy & Sustainability Statements

Depending on the scale of a development, an Energy Statement is often required as part of the planning application to set out how the development will address the energy efficiency and reduction of CO2 emissions set out in the local authority’s planning policy. As part of the ultimate consent for the scheme it is also a key working document for the design and construction teams throughout the build.

The key to delivering a fully compliant Energy Statement is to follow the energy hierarchy:

  • Be Lean: To use less energy by adopting sustainable design and construction measures, this includes providing buildings with high levels of thermal insulation and the provision of high efficiency building services solutions.
  • Be Clean: Supply energy efficiently. This requires a review of local energy resources, such as local district heat networks, and where these are available either make connection or make provision for future connection.
  • Be Green: Use renewable energy such as solar hot water heating, photovoltaics and heat pumps.
